Travel Tips and advice from Active Travel Laos

Laos is a country that offers plenty of challenging terrain, interesting sites and activities for the adventurous. You can kayak or go boating down the Mekong, trek through jungles atop an elephant, go exploring and even rock-climbing in limestone caves, hike mountains in search of remote and ancient temple ruins or camp out in wildlife conservation parks.
Below on this Laos Country Guide is some useful travel information for visitors contemplating a trip to Laos, including recommendations on where and when to go, visa requirements, money used, information about Laos food and drink as well as a handy Travellers’ Dos and Don’ts list.
Traveller Dos and Don’ts
- Do dress modestly when entering temples, museums, official buildings and government offices; no shorts or sleeveless shirts, tank tops or beach wear.
Shorts that cover the thighs are acceptable everywhere else. Be clean and neat in appearance whenever possible.
- Do like the locals and keep your sense of time flexible. Anticipating punctuality will often lead to frustration.
- Do remove shoes when entering temples and homes (it is convenient to wear slip-ons or sandals)
- Don’t point your feet towards people or Buddha images. When sitting in a temple, keep legs together and to the side in a mermaid position.
- Do think about leaving a small donation when visiting temples.
- Don’t take photos posing with Buddha images, handle, climb or sit on them
- Don’t, if you are a woman, touch monks, hand them objects, sit with or speak to them outside of temples. Any offerings need to pass through the hands of a man first.
- Do ask permission before taking photos of people, particularly in villages outside the cities where the people might have superstitions against being photographed.
- Don’t touch people or kids on their heads.
- Don’t lose your temper in public – talking loudly and angrily is often counterproductive.
- Don’t engage in public displays of affection.
- Do greet someone who is greeting you – by nop, handshake or a polite bow and smile – but don’t offer a kiss!
- Do respect the Laos’ interpersonal space – there is tiny physical contact or closeness between individuals who are not family.
- Don’t be surprised if someone goes right past you to get to something first – Laos generally do not queue up for anything.
- Do bargain for goods in markets and shops (except where there are fixed prices) but do so with a good attitude and smile. Prices are generally not inordinately high to start with as they might be in other Asian cities.

Heartwarming Memories of Holiday Traditions
My family’s two large holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, are fast approaching! Over the years we have developed some lovely Holiday Traditions.
Thanksgiving rolls around first and from the time I was a young teen it was my job to make and bake the pies – from SCRATCH! As my family has grown, to now include Grandchildren, so has the number and varieties of pies that are required to keep this Holiday tradition alive. Starting this year I plan on including my three year old Granddaughter in this wonderful yummy Holiday Tradition. Oh my, this sounds like a new Holiday Tradition is about to be born – Grandma and Granddaughter Pie Baking Day!!
Thanksgiving is not Thanksgiving without my Grandmas traditional stuffing. Her recipe has been passed down to me and I have now, over the last several years, been teaching my Daughter-in-Law this wonderful Traditional Holiday recipe. We double, and double , and then double again the recipe as our family has grown! This has caused some confusion for my Daughter-in-Law so this year I plan on starting another new Holiday Tradition – using as calculator to get the perfect blend of all ingredients, and hopefully eliminate confusion and frustration. Don’t worry Rachel, It’s gonna be much easier this year – I PROMISE!! Of course the calculator does not measure up to the oldest Holiday Tradition in our family – the Taste Tester – whom for many Holiday Seasons has been my son, lucky dog that he is!
Once Thanksgiving has passed we begin gearing up for Christmas. A long standing Christmas Tradition in my family is the receiving of new pajamas on Christmas Eve. Red and red and white pajamas are favorites, even with the male family members! And we also include new slippers in this Christmas Tradition!
Another old Christmas Tradition in my family is baking Christmas Cookies. This Holiday Tradition would not be complete unless the youngest family members are present to add the red and green glistening sprinkles to these wonderful Holiday cookies.
I hope you have enjoyed reading some of my family’s Holiday Traditions as much as I have enjoyed telling you about them. Wow, memories are just flooding back and bringing a large smile to my face. In fact, now that I have place these favorite Holiday Traditions in writing I realize I need to get to the market and begin stocking up on my seasonings, flour, and of course those important Traditional Holiday red and green sprinkles. With a new grandson in the family I superior get extra!
Happy Holidays for my family to yours!

How to Budget Over the Holiday’s
Holiday saving is not simple at all. In fact how many times have you found your self slap broke after the holiday’s have past? Then look no more for ways to refrain this problem that is upsetting our hungry pockets. There are three things that you must do. First off come up with a BUDGET PLAN, second open a HOLIDAY BANK ACCOUNT and third SHOP SMART. This no longer has to be you!
Things You’ll Need
* BUDGET PLAN
* HOLIDAY BANK ACCOUNT
* SHOP SMART
Budget Plan – Before doing anything we must always have a plan. It is not hard at all. Sit down and list all that you need expenses for starting with what is the most important to what is the least important. Ok, now that you have this together lets look at it again, “Come on you know that you can give up that pedicure women and men all of those cases of beer are not needed for the game”. Just kidding, now that I have your attention, look at it good and set your funds aside for your main account. This statement is going to contain all of your bills and household expenses. If you want to be a very great organizer set aside your free time expenses into your savings account. This way you will dip into your household expenses. After doing this proceed to the next step.
Holiday Bank Account – Now, this statement is for all of your holiday expenses. Gifts for all of your loved ones, the delicious dinner that is going to be cooked over the holidays and all of those toys that the kids are inactivity for. Make sure you come up with a dinner that you are not going to change because this is it. The chain and lock goes on the accounts afterwards and there is no changing. Anything that is a holiday expense categorize into one reasonable amount and this is going to go into your Holiday Bank Account. You are going to grow to love this account, because it is going to be your statement for any holidays that are due to come after you master this first Holiday “TEST”. Now, when you seeking for a bank, and if you don’t want to use your bank, find a bank that will not charge you a monthly fee. Who wants to try to build income when it is constantly being taken away? No, not me either. So look into these banks, because some of them will get you. I recommend a Credit Union if at all possible. Now you are nearly there, just hang in there.
Shop Smart – Gather all of those income papers and search online if you have online access for the holiday income and coupons. What more do we love than to know that while we are spending we are saving. You have saved up your all of the funds that you needed and deposited them into your holiday savings statement and now it is time to spend. Now, pull that list out and all of your coupons and shop accordingly. If you find yourself hot to get something turn your head, because this time it’s not about you. Review all of your receipts and make sure you are staying within your budget. It is also very good to go out and “Window Shop” ahead of time. This is just browsing around and finding what you want to get while at the same time comparing prices so when you have your mind prefabricated you will have gotten your the superior buy. Okay, how did you do? I would love to hear your comments. Pat your self on the back! You deserve it!

Best Luxury Cottage Holidays

Finding a holiday cottage is not difficult. Finding the perfect luxury cottage, however, is easier stated than done. With a massive amount of choice on the market, what features should you look for, and how do you separate the luxurious from the lacklustre?
Location, Location, Location
Location is often the deciding bourgeois when choosing a holiday cottage, as it can make or break your holiday. Luxury holiday cottages should have a prime location: a swift online map search lets you see if the cottage is right beside a motorway or built-up area; or many miles down an axle-breaking farm track. If you want a secluded getaway, then remember to check if the cottage is situated on its own or beside other holiday accommodation.
Size
Think carefully about the size of the cottage you choose.
Do you have enough bedrooms and, just as importantly, bathrooms? No one over the age of thirty will think about it a holiday if they have to queue to share one bathroom. For massive parties, it’s equally essential to check that there is a dining area massive enough to seat everyone comfortably.
Amenities
Luxury cottages should come fully kitted out for the number of people they accommodate. What you will need depends upon the nature of your holiday. If you are in a remote location and intend to cook for most of your stay then the kitchen should be well equipped, whereas if you intend to dine out several times this will be less important. A dishwasher, however, especially in massive holiday homes, is a must – you won’t want to spend your holiday at the kitchen sink.
If you have a family, then amenities for kids are especially important and should usually consist of both indoor and outdoor options! Is there an enclosed garden with any play equipment? Is there an sufficient selection of games, jigsaws or books? DVD player? The ideal luxury cottages should have some or all of these facilities.
Remember: a luxury holiday cottage and massive holiday home should grant you at least as much space and comfort as you have at home – all in a great location!

Simply follow the huge city travel tips below and you can't go far wrong!
1.
Luggage – Only take what you need when you travel and make sure that you have a list of the belongings in your bag. This huge city travel tip can save you time if your luggage does get stolen, but will also enable you to find what you need in an emergency. You should never leave your luggage unattended for even a second while traveling in a city. It will most likely either be stolen or tampered with if left unattended for a few seconds so ensure that it remains within your sight and possession at all times.
2. Money – Only take one or two credit cards with you on your huge city travel trip and ensure that the PIN numbers, if you have them, are not in your possession. Also, when taking money with you, split it up. Divide the cash between pockets in your luggage and areas on your person.
For example, keep some of it in your socks, some in a pocket, some in a money belt under your clothing and so on. That way, if anything does happen to you, you will at least have enough money to get back to your hotel. If you are going to a city abroad then take travelers checks with you because they are insured. If you lose them then you can cancel the originals and receive replacements usually within 24 hours.
3. Schedule – Vary your schedule from day to day when undertaking huge city travel. This might not seem like a huge deal to couples and families that are set in their ways, but individuals looking to make a swift buck one way or another undoubtedly target some tourists. If you vary your schedule then it will be nearly impossible to predict where you are going to be at any given time and this can keep you safe.
4. Clothing – Never wear anything that projects wealth or affluence when undertaking huge city travel. This includes jewelry, clothing and any accessories that might point to the fact that you would be a great target for a mugging or robbery. Most tourists wear normal and relatively cheap clothes that blend into the background, and anybody flaunting that guideline is putting him or herself at risk.
5. Family – If you and your family split up during huge city travel time, make sure that you have a way to get in touch with apiece other, have arranged a set meeting place and time, and are absolutely clear on all of these points so that you will be alerted to the fact that anything is wrong straight away. Wherever doable in huge city travel, individuals traveling together should stay together. However, the need does sometimes arise. If it does, make sure that you all have the address of the hotel and a map of the city with you at all times.
6. Scams – There are always individuals looking to scam people that are strangers to an area, and during the course of huge city travels there are many of them about. Only ask trusted sources for directions and advice, never follow the guidance of strangers unless they are affiliated with official bodies and only purchase merchandise from official stores. Stress Management For The Holidays
With the holiday season just around the corner, there is no wonder that many people feel burnt out even before going out to begin their holiday shopping. I have too felt the exhaustion starting to build when I see Christmas trees showing up in department stores and the sky turning pitch black after 5:00 p.m. What I recommend is for everyone to step back, take a deep breath, and make a plan on just how to deal with the last two months of the year. Here are four ways that might help assist the holiday blues.
1. Reflect on what stresses you out the most. During prior holiday seasons, what stressed you out the most? Was it that you didn’t have enough money to buy that special gift for everyone for Christmas? Or was it maybe your turn to cook for Thanksgiving? I would recommend that you prepare with solutions for the reoccurring motifs of the holidays that create panic. Once that is accomplished, you will be ready to deal with them in a calm manner.
2. Ask for help to assist the anxiety. Is it your turn to have everyone at your home for Thanksgiving? The ideal way to lessen the load of holiday stress is to ask for help. For example, make sure to request and confirm how many people are coming for Thanksgiving dinner. Ask if anyone is willing to either bring a dish, help clean up, or even prepare creative activities for the children that will be coming over for the holidays. This is a great way for people to participate and show appreciation for all that you do. This will give you a sense of support in your efforts to wage an enjoyable holiday experience for everyone
3. Holidays don’t have to be perfect. Sometimes the holidays will bring those relatives or in-laws that you only see once a year just because they are family. We know that families are not perfect so why do we expect holidays to be? Holidays and traditions were created to bring people together and to spend time with apiece other. Make sure to fashion your frame of mind on what holidays are designed for and not the expectation of how you want everything to transpire.
4. Remember to treat yourself. Make sure not to forget that you need to treat yourself to something special during this holiday. Purchasing a gift for yourself or conversing with a close friend can also help with those holiday jitters.
The holidays can be stressful but by reflecting on your past anxieties, asking for help, realizing that holidays are not perfect and remembering to treat yourself, will hopefully make your holiday parties merry and bright.
