PostHeaderIcon Important Boomer and Senior Travel Tips

Travel tips

Any time of year can be a favorite time to travel near and abroad. Travel this day might seem a tiny overwhelming, what with all the rules. Especially if you are, say, maturity in years.

But do not let that stop you! With few senior travel tips, no matter what your age or your problems, you can have a mythologic trip success – all in the details. I’ve been around – many places in the U.S., Europe several times for weeks or months, Kuwait (I lived there nearly a year – once a kid who travel), Mexico, Canada, South America. One thing I learned – travel is not “uniform.” Each place has problems and needs attention to detail.

Retirement travel is a favorite pastime during the golden years, (even if not removed). The first step to success is, as nearly anything in life, to establish a goal. His trip goal. (You got it, right?) So where you really want to go (no other mortal wants it to go).

All this involves different types of planning. Gourmet kitchen? Warehouse experience? Great adventure? Are you in the story? Want to try your stay comfortable in a European monastery rather than a typical hotel? Or maybe it’s something related to your special hobby. Hi – what about metal detecting.

No, I’m not kidding. I know a man who takes this so seriously (and he has a lot of fun too), which leads to other hiking and instruct them what to do. He and his wife, who have filled a shoebox with jewelry of gold and jewels of “hot spots” everywhere. His favorites are the beaches of Mexico. Many lost jewels there. About twice a year to let the tree go through the box and take home a few souvenirs. Because they have much of their own now, who want no more.

Not bad. All metal detectors.

In addition to a goal, you have to have comfort. Well, maybe not but I do. If you are a last minute planner, keep track of all the details can get crazy. But there are ways. To start with, has a piece of paper in your kitchen, bedroom or study. Each time you get an impromptu intent you have to do or have, add to the list. You can rearrange the list below, but at least you have it down. Then save the list forever and keep settings while traveling.

If you are a baby boomer or more might have special considerations that require a lot of additional considerations. Do you know what everyone? Are you afraid you’ll forget something? This is particularly important if you are traveling a long distance, overseas, for example. Do you really know about food, drink, sanitation, and bathroom … er …? I mean … Really? What do you think the safest restaurants and visitor. Do you believe everything you see and read in the glossy brochures? Think again. I learned the hard way. They can be very misleading – after all, are finally a income pitch. You need to do a tiny homework online at the library or bookstore. Ideal of all, speak to someone who’s been there done that. If you have a travel agent who really does, you’re lucky. You know exactly what all we should make the travel agent?

There are other considerations. If you are a woman, are you tempted to pack shoes and a bag for apiece team (and as many teams is that, exactly)? How do you pack a huge difference when you have to run around getting connections, getting through lines, achievement everywhere, and tank. Check out some of those books on how to pack lightly. And then there’s so important, “Thank God-I-brought-That” kit. Do you know what has to be there, in addition to aspirin and a good book? Last but not least, are you ever hunted in the air, whether you turn off the iron? Much less the rest of the list to three feet long so check before you go (provided you’ve thought of everything). And then there is important information to be given to a family member – just in case.

PostHeaderIcon School Holiday Activities

Determined not to have my two teens moping around the home arguing and taking control of the computers, I decided to take a look online and see what activities we could do together during the next school holidays.

A lot of the “things to do” that I found online where great ideas, but for my kids, most of the ideas they wouldn’t want to do. One site even recommended they clean their rooms out completely, hmm, yeah, didn’t sound like much fun for me or my kids.

So whenI sat my children down to speak over some ideas, of course they had us jumping from high places, shooting apiece other with paintballs and all sorts of “out of our budget” ideas. Shoestring budget this holidays kids, mums not working anymore.

So after some discussion, negotiation and comprimise, we finally came up with our 10 things to do this holidays. Most are focused on free activities, both in and out of the home.

There were a couple of requirements I made, one of which was that there were no planned activites over the weekend, this would be when I would try and get some work done. Second was that our home had to be in a resonable condition before we started our activity that day.

My 4yr old is at daycare three times a week so we are doing simple activities while hes home which I know he will enjoy as well.

So here are our 10 holiday activities:

1 -  Go for a trek somewhere – here in Melbourne Australia we have a achievement that’s called the 1000 steps, and its steep. We have planned to give it a go this holidays and pack a picnic to have at the top, Im also thinking I might need a rope so that my children can pull me to the top when they get there.

2 - DVD marathon – once a week we will just lie around the home watching motion picture s or television series from beginning to end. No cooking, cleaning or computer. We will lay out the mattresses on the floor in the lounge and spend the night there.

3 – Gold class motion picture trip – This is one of the two paid activities we will be doing this holidays. I thought it would be nice to make it a tiny different from going to the movies as we normaly do. A bit of a treat if you will.

4 – Invite the children friends over for a sleep over and get them all to camp out the back

5 -Go to the beach for the day, if its warm enough, if not then we can spend the day at a park somewhere.

6 – Ride a train to somewhere new getting off wherever we feel like getting off and go exploring our environment

7 – Make up a diversion routine – we are a family who adores to dance. We are going to make up our own diversion routine and maybe post it on You Tube for a bit of a laugh

8 – Take a class together – We want to check out a diversion class or a marital arts class that we have never done before and take up their “first class free” offer. Its all about getting out of our comfort zones this day.

9 – Games day – This will mean we have a few of the children friends over and play both board games and WII games all day. We will hire a whole lot of games from the video store and have a prize for the mortal who won the most games throughout the day.

10 – Laser Tag – Yep, they talked me into it. We are going to take the same friends from the games day and take them all out to shoot apiece other up in Laser Tag. This is the other paid activity that the children asked for. Apparently theres going to be a prize for the mortal who shoots mum the most times.

One other activity we are going to include durring the holidays is to set up a “school holidays” dream bored where we can place all our ideas for holiday activies for the futures. This will give us an intent of costs and timeframes for the next holidays and each holiday after.

Needless to state we are all looking forward to  the holidays now. I even have a couple of extra children coming over durring the day, their paretns all work so once they found out what we were doing they asked if we would take on a couple more kids. Maybe I should open a Teen Holiday Programme at my house, what do you think? lol.

I would love to know if anyone else has some great ideas for teen over the holidays that they use. Especially on a shoe string budget.

PostHeaderIcon Reduce Out-of-Control Holiday Spending

In this culture, we have been trained and programmed to believe that ‘more is better’ and that spending money on gifts equals love. Neither of these assumptions is true, but it’s very hard to break away from out-of-control buying when the holiday season comes around. Here are a few tips to help place it all in perspective.

Begin by making a list of all the people in your life who will be anticipating a gift from you during the holidays. Do you shop for only immediate family and close friends, or do you include distant relatives, co-workers and people you don’t actually like, but to whom you feel obligated? Sometimes, it’s possible, though difficult, to reduce this list of people. It might be doable simply to send a nice card instead of a gift to co-workers and others who are not really in your close circle of family and friends. It’s not simple to make these choices, but it’s possible, especially if you start in September or October, before the large advertising near begins.

After you’ve decided who is on your shopping list, decide which people are to receive one gift only, and which will receive more than one gift from you. Typically, the family members or close loved ones who will wake up on Christmas morning in the same home where you are, or who will assemble at the same gathering as you on the first night of Hanukkah, or whatever other holiday is the large gift-giving holiday in your family, are the people for whom you plan to buy more than one gift. It might be doable to limit this number, too. Each mortal on this list might receive: something to wear, something to play with, something to read, something to eat, something for work or school, something just for its beauty, something for growth , and a final gift: something you couldn’t resist giving, or something you prefabricated by hand for the recipient. You can subtract from this list. It’s not carved in stone, but it’s a good beginning list, for slicing down on the large heaps of toys and clothes that people find themselves feeling oppressed by at the end of the day. For those who are to receive one gift only, it need not be an costly gift. Gifts are given to please the recipient, not to impress. If you are giving a gift as an obligation, or to impress someone, maybe this particular mortal shouldn’t be on your gift-giving list. Send a card.

Another important tip for the holidays: Turn Off the TV . I found, especially with small kids in the house, that watching commercial TV from mid-September through Jan is to invite greed into the house. The ads become more and more outrageous and compelling as the season goes on. When there are kids in the house, they are extremely vulnerable to the strong recommendations spewing constantly from the television. When my family started watching only public TV and videos, DVDs and movies without commercial interruptions, we were much more healthy to control the whining, solicitation and even the desire for inappropriate gifts.

Limit the amount spent on apiece gift. We become a tiny hysterical sometimes as the holidays approach, and seem to think that apiece wish and whim that our loved ones express must somehow be satisfied by us. This is not really what gifts or holidays are intended to be. We give gifts to express our love, but the cost of the gift is irrelevant, and the gift is just a reminder of how we feel, not the love itself. Many times we have heard the story of the small child who receives an costly and/or hard-to-find gift, then spends the day playing with the box it came in.

Gift appropriateness helps us limit our giving, as well. For instance: state you have a teenage daughter with multiple piercings, who wears nothing but black. Maybe you don’t like what she’s doing, so you get her a frilly pink dress, which is never seen again after it has been unwrapped. It’s hurtful as well as wasteful to give a gift like this. Don’t bother. Get the girl something she would like, and use, such as a black, leather-bound journal and a quill pen with a bottle of ink, or something similar. If your gifts are to express your love, giving something you know the recipient will like is more important than making your point.

Likewise, if you have a toddler, get toddler-appropriate gifts, not something he or she will be unable to use on the day it is received. Getting a toy that is too advanced or complicated for the child in question to play with just instills a sense of unfortunate in the child, and clothing that is too large will be worn out by the time it actually fits. It’s a waste of time and money.

Giving your wife a vacuum cleaner, unless she tells you that’s what she wants, is not a gift for her; it’s a gift for the house. Likewise, giving your husband a leaf rake or snow shovel, unless that’s something he’s told you he wants, is taking unfair advantage of the opportunity to give a gift.

Often, beloved older relatives, such as great-aunts, grandparents, and friends of the family have spent the second half of their lives trying to get rid of all the ’stuff’ they’ve accumulated over the years. When you ask them what they want, they tell you not to get them anything. They probably mean it. Unfortunately, you might really want to express your love to this older mortal somehow. This is when your creativity can come into play the most. Make a one-of-a-kind gift, such as a coupon book for things you know your relative or friend would like, for instance, a day of visiting, or rides to the grocery store or the mall, or for a week of laundry duty. Even committing to visit older loved ones on a regular basis can be a superior gift than anything you could buy.

If you have a hobby, such as needlework or carpentry, give at least one handmade gift. The time spent on making the gift for a specific mortal keeps that mortal in your thoughts while you do it. If you don’t have a creative hobby, there are kits at craft stores that can instruct you one. Giving a handmade gift to a loved one is unlike any other kind of gift and is often appreciated more than something purchased in a store.

Gifts are not the only holiday expenditure: there’s also the food. If you make a large banquet for the holidays and end up throwing half of it away, or, worse, if you make a traditional dish or two that NOBODY EATS, and it ends up in the trash apiece year, stop making it. Only buy half of what you normally purchase. Only cook enough so that there are leftovers for one or two meals, if any. Don’t make traditional dishes that nobody likes. It’s wasteful and disrespectful of the holiday. If you make just enough, and you find your family wants more, it will all cost less after the large holiday shopping spree. Have it again after it goes on sale. Overeating is another way of wasting food. It’s very tempting to have apiece treat you can think of over the holidays, but if you know you’re going to regret it later, save yourself from that terrible feeling ahead of time, and stick to appropriate serving sizes. You’ll thank yourself later.

One final note: try not to go into debt for the holidays. Increasingly, we in the United Says are spending far beyond our means. We suffer with horrendous credit card payments, and apiece new year brings more. If you plan a budget and stick to it, shop sensibly and start giving gifts that represent love instead of trying to replace it, we will be much healthier, happier, and financially solvent after the holiday season is over again for the year.
